10 Anniversary of 1st Henllys Scout Group
1st Henllys Scout Group was started 10 years ago with a Beaver Scout Colony catering for 6 & 7 year old boys & girls. We had two leaders and 14 children.
During these 10 years, the group has grown to include 2 Beaver Scout Colonies, a Cub Scout Pack and a Scout Troup. 1st Henllys is now the largest Scout Group in the Torfaen District with around 80 Members including adult leaders.
In 2003 we initiated the formation of an Explorer Scout Unit, which we support and partner. The Explorer Unit "FreeSpirit" has its own identity and caters for young people when they leave the Scout Troup at 14 up to the age of 18.
The success of the Group is down to the enthusiasm and hard work of the adult leaders and supporters in providing an exciting and rewarding programme for the Scouts. This time is given entirely voluntarily and is rewarded by the satisfaction in seeing the youngsters develop and learn skills and values that will be with them always.
One of the main factors in this programme is that it is fun, not only for the Scouts but for the leaders as well. With the continued growth of the group we are continually looking for more adult help. If you think that you might like to be involved in this very worthwhile and fun organisation, then please contact me, or one of the other adults. There are many ways that you could help and there is a comprehensive training programme available for leaders.
To celebrate our 10th anniversary we are planning some special events. A campsite has been booked for a full group family camp, in early September. Usually, the sections have their own individual camps, so this will be a challenging enterprise for the leaders to organise! Nearer the end of September we hope to have a social evening for all members and their families. We will be inviting the original 14 Beavers, so if you are one of these and have moved house, please contact us so that we can get your invitation to you. It would be lovely if this evening could be free of charge for all members and therefore we would welcome any sponsorship to boost our fundraising events.
If you would like to know more about these events, the Scout Group, or Scouting generally, please contact the Group Scout Leader.
